Since 1938 when women entered the work force in large numbers, there was slight effort to give equal pay for equal work. In most instances
it didn't happen. In 1963 new legislation was ineffective. In 2007, a law passed to improve the situation, but women had to prove
the disparity within 180 days. In such a small window of time, and because of secretive negotiations where similar jobs were
given different titles, it was very difficult to learn about pay discrepancies. A new bill, “Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act Equal pay
for equal work has just passed in the House and in the Senate. Republicans in the House claimed it will bring a bevy of
frivolous lawsuits. Senator Barbara Mikulski, says quite clearly. “ Give equal pay for equal work, and you won't have to worry.”
Democrats,
more conscious of social justice, need to be informed about the financial crisis and the remedies being offered. Tax breaks constitute
33% of the proposed stimulus package, while infrastructure which will actually promote jobs, keeps shrinking in the plans. The
same old rhetoric that got us into this mess, somehow keeps rearing its limited view. Speak up now for more infrastructure. Obama
says he wants to listen.
Improvement in our healthcare system can also become a boon to the economy. Attend the JCODW forum on Healthcare
at 4:00 pm in the Old Charles Town Library on Feb. 8. Dr. David Baltierra, MD (Harpers Ferry) a member of Physicians for A National
Health Care Program, and Dr. Matthew Hahn, MD (Winchester), a member of Eastern Panhandle Single Payer Network (EPSPAN) will provide
more insight on this timely concern.
At the JCODW meeting on March 8 at the library, we will ask our legislators to attend a presentation
and discussion on “Clean Elections: Public Finances for Elections.” Delegate John Doyle has been a lead sponsor of the house bill
in West Virginia. Where Public Financing has already begun in 7 states, 90% of those using the system, won their elections. A 2 minute
or less video contest is open to present the value of public financed elections. Submit by Feb, 29. More info at www.wvoter-owned.org

you know that 8 million more women than men helped to put President Barack Obama into office?

Women will attend a Day at the Legislature. More information will be coming.
Graf's Graphs
Graphs demonstrate relationships. Hopefully, Graf's brief graphs will demonstrate your effectiveness in our community,
county and country where you improve places to live.
There was a woman who went away for a while seeking enlightenment. When
she returned her child asked her, “ Have you become divine?” “Oh, no!” she replied. “Well, what then, did you become a saint?”
Again she answered in the negative. “Well what happened?” the child persisted. “I became awake,” she said. Being awake
to the community, county, country, and to our world, we become fully human. We choose deeds that not only help ourselves and our family,
but we perceive what is good for our earth family.
